14 OEC Online, Spinal Immobilization
September 7th, 2009Distance OEC Learning Skills Drills. Mt. Baldy Ski Patrol
September 7th, 2009The Ski Patrol at Mount Baldy ski area in California put together a video series of OEC skills drills to augment the Outdoor Emergency Care book. I’m going to load them in reverse order so that they are in order when you go to the OEC Skills Drills category in the menu.
Emergency First Aid Kits
September 7th, 2009I’m going to go through the OEC book and copy the first aid kit load outs into this section over the next few days. That way, you can just check the First Aid Load Out category to know what you should be carrying in your first aid kit, depending on what you are using it for and the expected conditions.
Broken Collar Bone Treatment
September 6th, 2009OK, here’s one more broken bone video, but it just a snow boarder, so who cares, right? I’m just kidding, I love snow boarders, as long as they stay out of the mogul fields.
As a ski patroller, you are going to see a bunch of snow boarders coming in with broken collar bones, so you really need to know how to package a collar bone so the patient can get down the mountain to medical help as comfortably as possible. The best way to do this is by putting a figure 8 bandage on with a cravat, just like the “Man Bra” the guy in the video is wearing.
Lower Leg / Ankle Compound Fracture
September 6th, 2009I’m done. I don’t think I can watch any more videos of people breaking their bones… (I have to go puke now…)
Lower Leg Break
September 6th, 2009I have a hard time watching these…
Flail Chest
September 6th, 2009This makes my teeth hurt from clenching my jaw when I watched it. I wanted to grab something and strap it to his chest so he could breath.
Appropriate Sizing and Application of C-Collar
September 6th, 2009This is something every ski patroler should look at each year, since it is such an integral part of back-boarding and spine management.
Helmet Removal
September 6th, 2009This is a video of two rescuers removing a motorcycle or snowmobile helmet. This is harder than removing a ski helmet, but the skills required are the same for either type of helmet.
